How To Prepare For Your Photoshoot

Congratulations, you've booked your photoshoot and will soon have a beautiful collection of images that represent you at your best! Now what?

Here is a simple guideline I offer my clients on what they can do to prepare:

ONE WEEK before your photoshoot:

  • Start gathering the wardrobe pieces you will bring to your photoshoot. I recommend bringing 6-8 outfits (or just tops are fine if we're only shooting tighter-cropped headshots) so that we have options to choose from.

  • Consider jewelry and accessories like belts, hats, and footwear, if that's something you'd like to incorporate.

  • Touch base with your photographer if you have any questions about your photoshoot.

ONE DAY before your photoshoot:

  • Finalize your wardrobe items and pack them up so they're ready to grab 'n' go. Wardrobe bags are ideal, but if you only have regular bags or a suitcase, we can always fire up the steamer at the studio.

  • Your hands might end up in some of the shots, so do what you need to do with your nails so that you'd be okay with them making an appearance on-camera.

  • Drink plenty of water and consider limiting alcohol and/or any foods that might cause inflammation. Whatever "clean eating" means to you, this might be the day to embrace it.

  • Aim to get a good night's sleep. But if that doesn't happen, don't stress. We can add a few extra hours of sleep in editing ;)

  • Check the address and directions to the studio so you can plan your route and give yourself enough time for the commute.

ON THE DAY of your photoshoot:

  • Eat a wholesome meal before your photoshoot.

  • Meditate, exercise, journal, cuddle your pet, or anything that helps put you in a positive frame of mind.

  • Give yourself a bit more time than usual to do your hair and makeup at home. If you're having your hair and makeup done professionally at the studio, arrive with a clean face and clean, dry hair.

  • In the mirror, tell yourself three things you love about yourself (yes, it’s cheesy but it works!) and that today is about celebrating YOU. Focus on being present and authentic, and let the photographer take care of the rest.

  • Remember to bring:

    • Your wardrobe items, including jewelry and accessories.

    • Any make-up and hair tools/accessories you'll need to make adjustments throughout your shoot.

    • Liquids and/or snacks that will help keep your energy up during your photoshoot.

With a bit of preparation, you can free yourself up to feel at ease in the time leading up to and during your photoshoot. I love hearing what clients do to prepare for their photoshoots, so please share any ideas that you think could help others below.
